Players who were born on or after January 1, 2003 are eligible to compete in the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will take place the following year. At the Concacaf U-20 Championship this past summer, the United States of America won a spot in both the Under-20 World Cup and the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Players must have been born on or after January 1, 2001 in order to compete in the Olympics. There are two players on the roster for the training camp who are ineligible to compete in the U-20 World Cup but are eligible to compete in the 2024 Olympics. From the 25th of October through the 5th of November, the senior US Men’s National Team will be holding fitness training in Frisco for MLS-based players who are still in the running for a spot on the World Cup roster but are no longer competing in their league.
Eight players are returning from the U-20 team that won the Concacaf Championship, and seven of those players played for the United States in the Revelations Cup that was held in Mexico City against Peru, Mexico, and Paraguay a month ago. At the tournament, the United States of America finished with a record of two wins and one draw. Forward Brian Gutierrez and Midfielder Diego Luna each scored twice for the USA.
On the roster, there are representatives from twelve different clubs, including two players from Chicago Fire FC, two players from LA Galaxy, two players from New York Red Bulls, and two players from San Jose Earthquakes. The participants come from eleven different states, with California having the most representation with four individuals.
The training camp in Frisco also serves as a homecoming for Varas, who began his career as a professional coach with FC Dallas in 2019 as an assistant coach. After joining FCD in the fall of 2017 as the head coach of the U-16 squad, Varas went on to become a member of the first team staff under the direction of Luchi Gonzalez, who is now an assistant coach with the senior United States Men’s National Team.
